Podiatry Associates of Southeast Texas


Podiatry is a medical specialty that deals with the medical and surgical treatment of the foot. After completing a four-year bachelor's degree program, a student then attends a four year podiatric medical school. After podiatry school, selected graduates participate in post graduate training, also known as residency.

Neil A. Burrell, DPM, FACFAS

Neil A. Burrell was born and raised in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area. He attended Lamar University and graduated from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating, he completed a two year residency in podiatric medicine and surgery in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Burrell was appointed chief resident for the second year. Dr. Burrell's training was in surgical and medical management of the diabetic foot as well as general foot surgery. He returned to Beaumont in 1989 to practice podiatry with sub specialization in diabetic foot care. Dr. Burrell has had Type 1 diabetes since 1969.

Dr. Burrell is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and is board-certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Texas Podiatric Medical Association. He holds a professional membership in the American Diabetes Association and is active at the local, state, and national levels of the ADA. Dr. Burrell is a certified diabetes educator and is a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. He is an associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Department of Orthopaedics and the Department of Family Practice at UTMB in Galveston.

Dr. Burrell is a past member of the Board of Directors of the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators in Chicago, IL. He also sits on the Diabetes Advisory Committee of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Dr. Burrell was awarded the 1994 Jefferson Award by the Institute for Public Service in Washington, DC, for his volunteer work in diabetes. He was also a recipient of a Senate Proclamation issued by the Texas State Senate for his volunteer work in Southeast Texas. He had the distinct honor of carrying the Olympic Torch through Beaumont on May 22, 1996.

Dr. Burrell actively lectures to the public as well as physicians and medical groups on diabetic foot problems as well as other foot conditions.

Debra J. Lusk, DPM, FACFAS

Debra J. Lusk was born in Corpus Christi and spent her childhood years in Houston. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and was graduated with honors from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in 1987. She then completed a one-year residency at Thorek Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, IL. She joined a group practice in Rochester, NY together with her husband Dr. Joseph Weinman and lived in that area for 10 years. She joined Dr. Burrell on June 1, 1998 and is thrilled to be back in Texas.

Dr. Lusk is board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. She is a member-at-large of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association of Scholl College. She regularly reviews podiatric residency programs as a representative of the Joint Residency Review Committee on behalf of the Council on Podiatric Medical Education. Dr. Lusk holds a professional membership in the American Diabetes Association and is also a member of the American Association for Women in Podiatry. She is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Texas Podiatric Medical Association.
